The Covid-19: Pinning down the ‘Ground Zero’

March 2020- the month and year, the world came to a sudden stop when the human race encountered a modern plague. The Coronavirus or COVID 19 caught everyone unaware paralyzing lives. Suddenly lockdowns, curfews, quarantines, masks and physical distancing have become common words. While the medical world hurriedly cuddled up in hushed meetings deliberating how to tackle the pandemic, the hapless human beings were left high and dry, falling victims to the vicious virus in droves.

Now we are in March 2021 completing the euphemistic “Year of the Pandemic” after several million deaths and billions of dollars’ businesses down the drain. But how did all this start?

According to Medscape, Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as illness caused by a novel coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-nCoV), which was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

First reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 31, 2019 the outbreak was declared a global health emergency by WHO on January 30, 2020 and later, on 11 March 2020 as a global pandemic, its first such designation since declaring H1N1 influenza a pandemic in 2009.

While scientists and the WHO team were trying to identify the Ground Zero pandemic, there are assumptions that the virus originated from the Yunnan Province, but where exactly? Upon investigation, by a few experts, it was found that in 2012, several mining works in an old mining cave fell ill with pneumonia like symptoms and three out of the infected died.

Investigators from the Wuhan Institute of Virology sampled the patients and found a SARS-related coronavirus- a strain labelled RaTG13. It shares 96.2% of the genetic identity of SARS-CoV2, making it the virus’s closest known relative to date.

Dr Giovanni Apolone, the scientific director of the National Cancer Institute in Milan, said, it was only his personal belief, but “the origin of the virus is almost 100% in China…. In which part of China, I don’t know”.

Thanks to the unprecedented efforts by pharmaceutical giants and bio-pharma scientists and technicians, we now have a few vaccines developed by some pharmaceutical companies and are now people across the world are being vaccinated on war footing. That said and done, we are still battling against the virus every day and losing thousands, devoured by the deadly virus.

From WHO to independent research laboratories and government-initiated researches are going on, we are still unable to pin-point COVID-19’s ground Zero. Will we ever be able to identify it?

A million, perhaps, a billion-dollar question to which no one knows the answer.

The only solace now seems to be the lessons from the past and pin our hopes that the pandemic will die its own death… like the earlier ones.
